Local Learnings

In addition, we have some local learnings from the past few fire cycles:

  1. Clear signage is imperative in an emergency. First responders need to be able to quickly find you. When seconds count, hesitating or making a wrong turn can be deadly. The APFSC has helped the neighborhood with County code-compliant reflective address signs along Atlas Peak Rd. If you live on a private road, each intersection needs address signs with arrows. If you need help with such signage, please contact us.
  2. Gates provide privacy but also need to be opened in an emergency. County code requires Knox boxes on all gates to enable first responders access. If you have a gate, you need a Knox box for your own safety. If you don’t have a Knox box or know what it is, please contact us.
  3. Maintenance and vigilance are required. Fire preparedness does not end with creating defensible space and fire hardening. Leaves and debris must be kept away from structures and roof gutters must be kept clean (leave gutter guards are code for new construction). Brush and weeds grow back and need to be kept clear each year within the safety zone.  If you need help with a fresh set of eyes, please contact us.
  4. Common sense can be applied to fire preparedness. Think of flammability when constructing things near structures. Don’t attach wooden fences to structures, use metal. Decking of non-flammable materials like stone or concrete are better than wood. Outdoor furniture should be of non-flammable materials if stored near structures. During fire season, maintenance such as mowing that can create sparks should be completed early in the morning and be prepared in case a spark causes a fire. Don’t use metal blades on weed whackers once weeds dry out because they can spark when striking rocks. Gas grills are a safer choice than charcoal for sparks, however, propane tanks create another hazard. Think before you act and think ‘firewise’. If you have questions about what is firewise, please contact us.
