Our Neighbor: Napa Land Trust (managing Sutro and Walt Ranch)
Mike Palladini Stewardship Director at the Napa Land Trust sent us a remarkable list of some of the fuel reduction, fire protection activities and projects that the Trust has been working on within their lands in the Atlas Peak area:
- We maintained our fuel reduction area on the southern end of the Sutro Preserve along the Circle R boundary through vegetation thinning and sheep grazing.
- Working in coordination with Napa Firewise, we completed a second consecutive year of road and ridgetop firebreak improvements on the Sutro Ranch to enhance firefighting access and fire containment.
- We completed installation of a 100 ft. shaded fuel break through vegetation thinning along key access roads on the Walt Ranch, working with Great Tree Tenders/Redwood Empire.
- Working with Napa Firewise, we completed a second consecutive year of roadbed and firebreak improvements (blading and grading) on the Walt Ranch to enhance firefighting access and points of fire containment.
- Following installation of new fencing and stockwater systems, we re-initiated cattle grazing on hundreds of acres within the Sutro Ranch.
The Napa Land Trust plans to expand on these efforts, develop new management plans, establish new partnerships and seek additional sources of funding. Learn more online at Napa Land Trust.
