Atlas Peak Fire Safe Council:  2023 Road Clearing

We are very pleased to announce that Napa Firewise (NCFF) has a grant to do extensive work along Atlas Peak Rd. to clear the roadside of brush and fuels for fire safety. This project is within the scope of the countywide and APFSC community wildfire protection plans (CWPP) and is important for our neighborhood. Work is planned for this summer, prior to the height of fire season.

The goal is to create 50 feet of clearance where possible, 15 feet from the road edge on both sides of the road. Work will be performed by licensed and insured contractors who will also provide traffic control when needed. The plan is to start at Westgate and continue up the road until the very end.

All parcel owners with land contiguous to Atlas Peak Rd. must sign an agreement for the work to be performed. If your land is along the County road and we don't hear back, a separate email and / or letter will be sent to you as a reminder. Please note that even if little work is needed on your property, we ask that the form be completed for our records.

The following are the guidelines for the fuel reduction work:

Fences: Work will stop at fences unless mitigating circumstances require going beyond the fence. A dead or dying tree that could fall and block the road is a great example.

Landscaping shrubs and plants: Landscaping plants that are properly maintained and meet County guidelines will not be touched. However, if the landscaping does not comply with County Fire Protection Fire Hazard Chp 8.36 which pertains to defensible space and public nuisances, work will be performed for code compliance.

Landscaping privacy screens: Plants within the 15 feet from the road edge used as a privacy screen, such as oleanders, which are pyrophytic will be cut back.

Chips: Will be dispersed and left on site when possible.

Tree removal: All trees that pose a potential safety hazard for egress will be removed. This includes all dead/dying trees and even live trees up to 20 inch DBH (diameter breast height) if they pose a hazard. This includes all live Eucalyptus, Bay and Douglas Fir trees up to 8 inch DBH.

Weeds: The scope of the work is focused on brush and trees. Annual roadside easement weed clearing will be performed by a separate vendor once the weeds dry out. This work will be funded by the APFSC and donations.

Cost: There is no cost to property owners, all work is free of charge.

It cannot be emphasized strongly enough how important this work is to our neighborhood safety. Emergency egress to escape a fire and emergency vehicle access are imperative.

Everyone’s cooperation and support are greatly appreciated.
